How I met my husband

1 August 2009

I met David at Madigan Army Medical Center, where he was the Staff Judge Advocate. He was 25 years old and I was too. I went to a meeting there, a tad late [on purpose…] and looked around for the best looking guy. He caught me eye, so I sat down next to him. Every week, I’d just sit there through this boring meeting and wait for it to end so I could walk out with him and suggest coffee.

But David was always out of the room before I even picked up my hand bag from the floor. This went on for three months and then I took another job. I couldn’t figure out how such a good looking guy could get away from me.

Then my brother, who went to Canada during the Viet Nam War, decided to come back to the states and enter the amnesty program. But first he needed some legal advice. I told him not to worry, I knew who to call.

So I called David’s office and Hilda, his secretary, did her everything to shoo me away because his job was all about medical malpractice. I told her to “just put it through lady because this was a personal call.”

Once I had him on the phone, I explained everything pertinent to Leo’s return to David, who just said he’d get back to me because he had a little research to do.

So he called back a week later and I nearly fell asleep listening to him drone on about the laws. He got to the end of it and said, “So what are you doing now?”

I suddenly perked up and we had a nice little conversation and then he asked me out on a date. We went to this bar where there was a band and he was dancing so close to me I could feel his private parts rubbing against my leg.

So I asked him why he danced so close and he just said he was affectionate and I knew I was going to sleep with him that night after that response.

One month later we moved in with each other. We lived together for a year. I told him he had better decide to marry me or I would have to leave because I wasn’t going to do this live with my boyfriend thing forever. Poor David went into our bedroom and laid down on the bed and rubbed his temples.

The rest is history. We had an apartment upstairs at Rhodesleigh. It was wonderful. We had this lovely view of the lake from our living room. The apartment was really big and it was furnished. Virginia, the landlady, watched helplessly as I moved in with the best looking bachelor in the building. She always thought he belonged to her. This was going to be a turf war. Oh but she was about 67 years old at the time and we were 25 years old.

We had our reception at Rhodesleigh Manor. You can see this property at www.rhodesleigh.com. It’s absolutely magnificent.

I have two children: Heather and Carlos. Heather is 32, lives in Seattle, and works as an attorney. Carlos is 30 and lives down the street from us. He married a woman from Guadalajara, Julissa, and they have one child….a cute little four year old named Liza.

We have been married since 1976, this year was our 33rd wedding anniversary. Come September David will begin getting his Army Reserves retirement checks after 30 years of service. To celebrate, we plan on taking a trip to Egypt. He has always wanted to see the pyramids.
